Ariel, chilenischer Schriftsteller, * Buenos Aires 6. 5. 1941; wuchs in den USA und (seit 1954) in Chile auf, seit 1967 chilenischer Staatbürger, nach 1973 im argentinischen, französischen und niederländischen Exil; lebt seit 1983 überwiegend in den USA. Leitmotiv seiner schriftstellerischen Arbeit und Lehrtätigkeit als Professor für lateinamerikanische Literatur ist die Aufdeckung globaler Strukturen, die den Nationen der »unterentwickelten Länder« die Vorstellungen der herrschenden Weltmächte aufzwingen. Internationales Aufsehen erregte er mit dem politischen Psychodrama »La muerte y la doncella« (englisch »Death and the maiden«, Uraufführung 1991; deutsch »Der Tod und das Mädchen«; Film: 1995, Regie: R. Polanski) über Vergangenheitsbewältigung am Beispiel des nationalen Traumas der Pinochetdiktatur.
